About me

HI I'M ALEX

I've been able to find my way into Software Engineering industry and make my mark, but I am still hungry for more. I have dreams of developing interactive products with a passionate team of individuals. Such products that interest me are those that are close to their audience/fan-base, products in fields like video games, entertainment, and social-media. I am determined to always learn new things and apply that knowledge to create. Anything I can learn is something I should challenge myself to pursue.

EngProd for Google Cloud Platform's VPC Service Controls.

  • Coordinated with the VPC Service Controls team to develop high quality testing tools to minimize toil and quickly spin up configurable test environments to validate the behavior of other services within a virtual private cloud
  • Promoted within three semesterly cycles due to strong independence and impact (one cycle ahead of the average).
  • Designed and implemented large-scale migration of a test environment management tool (which previously used Google Cloud Deployment Manager) to use the IaC tool Terraform. Migration also included the challenge of migrating legacy environments as old as 1.5 years.
  • Increased speed of said tool’s deployment checkout process by ~40% for VPC-SC configurations.
  • Quickly gained Python readability within two quarters, gaining the ability to approve Python code to be submitted to Google's codebase

Five Prime Therapeutics utilizes an expansive protein library and unique discovery pipeline to target cancer via immunoncology. At Five Prime, the Systems Engineering team designs and develops applications to faciliate discovery and bring data from capture to visualization. Here I performed the following tasks:

  • Developed web services and applications designed to facilitate end-to-end operations from data capture to data visualization
  • Quickly adapted to codebase to improve function and clarity of preexisting projects
  • Wore many hats, acting as both designer and developer and overseeing projects from requirements gathering to deployment

SOFTWARE DEVELOPER

UCSD DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS: KNIGHT LAB
APRIL 2018 - OCTOBER 2018

The Knight Lab uses and develops state-of-the-art computational and experimental techniques to ask fundamental questions about the evolution of the composition of biomolecules, genomes, and communities in different ecosystems, including the complex microbial ecosystems of the human body. Here I performed the following tasks:

  • Refactored Python scripts used to extract survey data by integrating HTTP requests to pull data from external survey API
  • Updated PostgreSQL database to house newly formatted data and prepare for metadata analysis
  • Designed unit tests to ensure quality and consistency of scripts

Third-person shooter prototype

A third-person shooter prototype built in Unreal Engine using C++. Includes survival and time rush game modes, fully animated characters, enemy AI, and sound and music.

3D mini tank prototype

A 3D tank shooter prototype built in Unreal Engine using C++. Implements simple AI and particle instantiation.

Zephyr

A top-down 2D retro space shooter. Built in Unity with C#.

WWGFBT

Web application built with friends allowing users to randomly poll bubble tea shops based on a given location.

MoeBot

A personal bot for the social platform, Discord. Used for fun social features and to grab game data for me and my friends. Built with Python.

Knight Lab Vioscreen Sync

A script used to sync external data with the Knight Lab's database. Challenges involved refactoring the lab's database to account for previously unaccessed data and formatting that data to be usable by researchers.
